James Backhouse (8 July 1794 – 20 January 1869) was a Yorkshire Quaker and botanist from Darlington, England. He travelled to South Africa in 1838, where he spent two years in the Cape Colony, visiting colonial settlements with the Quakerly message of peace and goodwill.
