Hermanus Kloof Panel

Inspiration: These works were created by Lieut. A.W. Godfrey (c.1825–1854) during his expedition to the Cape with the 1st Battalion, Rifle Brigade. His sketches and notes capture both the landscapes and the history of the region. Hermanus Kloof is described as “this fertile valley…formerly the location of the Gaika chief, Hermanus,” while Chumie Peak is recorded in his journal as “Chumie Peak and River, January 7, 1853.” Each work offers a rare glimpse into the natural beauty and historical significance of the Cape during the mid-19th century.
