Inspiration: The Leopard Tortoise, a member of Africa’s “Small Five,” became the muse for this design through its extraordinary shell - each scute recording the passage of seasons like rings on a tree. Its story reflects patience, resilience, and the quiet poetry of nature’s design.
Design Interpretation: The carpet’s pattern draws from the geometry and subtle symmetry of the tortoise’s plastron - the base of the shell, whose gentle concave shape in males (a detail that has always fascinated me) allows for their unique mating ritual. This quiet piece of natural engineering became the foundation of the design, transformed into a timeless, tactile surface. Earthy neutrals and natural gradients mirror the Karoo landscape - steady, grounded and full of life.
