Introducing 8 New Carpets in the ‘Call of the Karoo’ Collection

Introducing 8 New Carpets in the ‘Call of the Karoo’ Collection

Two years after launching our first carpet collaboration with MONN, we are expanding the 'Call of the Karoo' collection with eight new designs. Rooted in memory, land, and the stories of the Karoo, this range continues our exploration of how narrative can be woven into the textile surfaces we encounter every day.

A Story That Begins with Memory

As with many Evolution collections, this chapter began with my mother, Bella’s, memories, her deep connection to the Karoo and the stories it holds. From fossils and lichens to tortoise shells, shadows and archival sketches, these carpets draw from the textures and rhythms that shape this magical region.

Each new Evolution Product design carries a fragment of heritage and is a reminder of how place shapes us.

A return to Graaff-Reinet and an off-grid Inventure in the Sneeu Mountains breathed new life into my connection with the Karoo. These analogue frames hold the layers of landscape and story that shape the newest additions to this collection.

Design That Echoes the Land

Organic patterns reference geological layers, fossil impressions, plant structures and shifting light. A palette of indigo, antique rust, pale blue, olive, charcoal, and stone mirrors the Karoo’s drama: sky meeting rock, shadow meeting sun. Each motif holds its own rhythm, from the symmetry of a tortoise shell to the microscopic world of lichen.

Texture and tone guided the design process.

Crafted Locally, Built to Last

Proudly woven in South Africa with our partners at MONN, the carpets combine artistry with engineering. They are UV-resistant, weather-resilient and easy to clean — performing beautifully outdoors while adding comfort and texture indoors. Supporting local manufacturing also allows us to reduce environmental impact and strengthen the South African industry.

Durable, colourfast and low-maintenance, they’re designed to be lived with for years to come.

Grounding Spaces, Holding Stories

These pieces are made to move effortlessly between home, lodge, or hotel, bringing both practicality and narrative depth into a space. Whether placed in a family living room or overlooking the veld, they carry the energy of landscape and heritage.

Carpets anchor a room. They invite gathering and connection.

A Step Forward in Our Design Journey

These additions deepen our carpet offering by embracing new weaving technology introduced by MONN. Made with high-quality yarns made from 30% recycled polyester and polypropylene. The expanded capabilities allow for greater texture, detail, and colour variation, broadening how we translate narrative into design.

This range reflects Evolution’s commitment to innovation, storytelling and local South African craftsmanship.

A Glimpse at the Designs

Each of the eight carpets draws from a distinct story within the Karoo:

  • Tortoise Carpet - the geometry of the tortoise plastron, a symbol of patience and resilience.

  • Fossil Carpet - compact symmetry inspired by a 250-million-year-old burrowing species.

  • Skadus Carpet - cyanotype shadows capturing the interplay of light, movement, and stillness.

  • Koper Carpet - early landscape sketches of Graaff-Reinet translated into woven topography.

  • Desolation Dusk Carpet - a palette evoking twilight over the Valley of Desolation.

  • Lichen Gold Carpet - magnified textures of lichen, celebrating coexistence and endurance.

  • Karoo - Delft-inspired linework reimagined through a South African lens.

  • Atherstonia Scutata — a fossil impression reimagined in pattern and tone.

(We’ll be sharing deeper stories about each design in the coming year, so keep an eye out on our socials)
